  11. MACLAN Connect F/P version 2.11 is compatible with LANtastic NOS 
  12. version 4.xx.

  14. Product Overview
  15. MACLAN Connect F/P serves as a gateway from LANtastic to the Macintosh 
  16. environment.  By designating a workstation on the LAN as the MACLAN 
  17. Connect F/P server, the following connectivity features can be supported:
  18. File sharing: The gateway server is basically turned into an AppleShare file 
  19. server supporting Apple's AppleTalk Filing Protocal (AFP) standard. Physical 
  20. and logical drives on the LAN are then accessible as AppleShare volumes.  
  21. Since DOS and Macintosh files have different naming, directory and 
  22. privilege structures, MACLAN also supports a mapping scheme across the 2 
  23. operating systems.
  24. Printer sharing: Redirected POSTCRIPT or POSTCRIPT compatible printers on 
  25. LANtastic (LPT1-3, COM1-2) can be accessed from the MAC side via the 
  26. Apple Chooser interface just as any other AppleShare printer.  As a result, 
  27. even non-AppleTalk interface printers such as the HP Laserjets (with the 
  28. Postscript option/cartridge) can now be shared. 
  29. E-mail: MACLAN Connect also provides the gateway connection for many 
  30. popular E-mail packages such as cc:Mail and QuickMail.

  32. Product Installation Notes
  33. Just follow the steps listed in the Hardware Setup chapter in the MACLAN 
  34. User's Manual.  Pay special attention to avoiding IRQ/Memory Address 
  35. conflicts between the AppleTalk card and the LANtastic Network card.  
  36. Installation instructions for LANtastic has been provided on p. 2-20 to p.2-
  37. 21 of the manual.  The following AppleTalk cards have been tested with 
  38. LANtastic: Apple LocalTalk, Farallon PhoneTalk, Dayna DaynaTalk, 3Com 
  39. 3C503, 3C523, 3C503TP, 3C523T, IBM Token Ring 4mbit, 16/4.
  40. On the MAC side, AppleShare workstation client should be installed on each 
  41. Macintosh (run Installer from your Macintosh system disks, select 
  42. CUSTOMIZE, then highlight AppleShare Workstation).  The MACLAN Admin 
  43. utility is optional and may be installed on each workstation if desired.

  45. Product Execution Notes
  46. A lot of concepts are actually very similar across the LANtastic network and 
  47. the AppleShare network: Volumes need to be mapped (redirected), users 
  48. need to be created and granted the appropriate privileges for the files and 
  49. folders (directories), printers need to be redirected, etc.  All these are done 
  50. through the FPCONFIG utility on the DOS side or MACLAN Admin on the 
  51. MAC side.  Any inherent LANtastic volume privileges will remain intact for 
  52. the Macintosh users.  Apple privileges will not undermine LANtastic security 
  53. but instead can exist on top of LANtastic's.
  54. Then, the MLDRIVER, FPSERVE and LANtastic need to be started on the 
  55. MACLAN server.  Important: remember to turn off any messaging services, 
  56. alerts etc. on the MACLAN server, e.g. you may want to include the line 
  57. 'net message /disable' in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  Miramar recommends 
  58. that these parameters be used in your CONFIG.SYS: FILES=100, 
  59. BUFFERS=50.  You also need to run SHARE.EXE.  The parameters for 
  60. SHARE and the memory requirement for MACLAN are specified in the 
  61. Hardware Setup chapter.  Here's a sample AUTOEXEC.BAT for the 
  62. MACLAN server:

  78. On the MAC side, you will then be able to log into the MACLAN server and 
  79. the desired volumes thru MAC's Chooser dialogue interface.  Similarly, 
  80. redirected printers on the MACLAN server will appear as resource icons on 
  81. the Chooser dialogue screen to allow users to send their print jobs to the 
  82. LAN devices.

  84. Compatibility Notes
  85. Because of the differences between the Macintosh and the DOS file 
  86. structures, the MACLAN Connect server needs to maintain extra MAC-
  87. specific information for each MAC files (e.g. the long name, file type and 
  88. creator).  This is stored in several system data files in the directory where 
  89. the server programs reside.  MACLAN has provided several special utilities 
  90. to assist users in backing up and restoring MAC-specific information.  Please 
  91. refer to the Utilities chapter in the User's Manual and change your backup 
  92. procedure accordingly.

  94. Other Miramar Products
  95. This bulletin was created for MACLAN Connect F/P version 2.11.  MACLAN 
  96. Connect F/P Lite is an entry level product in the same product line.  
  97. MACLAN Connect and MACLAN Connect Lite, an earlier product line from 
  98. Miramar without the printer sharing capability should also exhibit the same 
  99. compatibility behavior with LANtastic.
